| I found some great albums on vinyl this past weekend, including “Pet Sounds” (!!!!!), “Runt: The Ballad of Todd Rundgren,” “Willie Nelson Sings Kristoferson,” and Emmylou Harris’s “Angel Band.” I bought the first three at Wuxtry, and John, the multi-instrumentalist from Olivia Tremor Control / Circulatory System rang me up, approving each record by nodding and exclaiming “Yeahh…far out!” (I’m not exaggerating; he said “far out” at least three times.) I really think record and bookstores should only hire employees, like John, that exert well-allocated enthusiasm. That’s probably why Wuxtry is the best record shop in town, and why I typically avoid the self-consciously-cool Lo Yo-Yo. (And after all, R.E.M. was formed thanks to Peter Buck meeting Michael Stipe, while working at Wuxtry. So it will always be cooler anyway.) | | |
| - I can hear them calling way from Oregon I can hear them calling way from Oregon And it's almost independence day
Looks like I'm heading to Oregon in less than two months, and I'll be there at least until September. Maybe I'll become an expert in organic farming. And, of course, drum circles.

| Alright, so 2005 has brought us some excellent new albums. In fact, I can think of ten, after only eighty-one days into the new year, that are excellent. So, without further due, here are my Top 10 of 2005 so far:
1. Ed Harcourt - Strangers 2. Archer Prewitt - Wildnerness 3. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm 4. Black Mountain - Black Mountain 5. Doves - Some Cities 6. Thievery Corporation - Cosmic Game 7. M83 - Before the Dawn Heals Us 8. Bonnie Prince Billy - Superwolf 9. Dead Meadow - Feathers 10. Clem Snide - End of Love
Am I overlooking any good 2005 albums? I'm told the new Spoon is one of the best so far, but I haven't heard it yet. | | |
| I've been griping lately about the lack of good music in Athens (and the complaint, compared with this time last year, has validity). But, I've recently discovered that Elvis Costello is coming at the end of April (Sondre Lerche is opening), and the Circulatory System is playing two shows. Plus, the Whigs are playing soon.
Why pamper life's complexities When the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat? I would go out tonight but I haven't got a stitch to wear This man said it's gruesome that someone so handsome should care

| And my friend David Kline told me, "It falls strangely on Amish ears, This talk of how you find yourself. We Amish, after all, don't try To find ourselves. We try to lose Ourselves"--and thus are lost within The found world of sunlight and rain Where fields are green and then are ripe, And the people eat together by The charity of God, who is kind Even to those who give no thanks. | | |
